The girls and I decided that we were going to give each other pedicures - RAINBOW pedicures! They by no means look professional, but they loved it and it looks really cute : ) We also did our fingernails with a sparkly polish called Rockstar - Ella especially liked that!

Christmas 2010
The girls put out cookies for Santa. Ella wanted to take a drink of his milk just to "make sure it was nice and cold."
We were lucky enough to be able to get the kids everything they asked for from Santa. Eventhough the reason for the season is not to get presents and material things, we love giving the kids presents. Among other things, Ella got her coveted Lalaloopsy dolls and the Littlest Pet Shop toys she asked for; Grace got her Nintendo DS and the Littlest Pet Shop toys; and Colt got a basketball hoop and a bunch of cars and trucks.Overall, it was a great year and a great Holiday season and hopefully we'll have a wonderful New Year!

Little Miss Muffet & The Three Pigs
Here is my first attempt at some embroidery. I chose the Three Pigs to try first. Not too bad, if I do say so myself. I decided to do the "Red" pig a lighter color since I imagined her as a "she."
Here is Little Miss Muffet. Her curls gave me a bit of a challenge, but overall, she was pretty easy. The polka dots on her dress were supposed to be French knots, but I decided to cross stitch them instead.
Little Boy Blue and the Three Bears are next...

Vintage Tea Towels
I'm in the process of embroidering some vintage looking tea towels. As I finish them, I will post the pictures here. I can cross stitch like on one's business, but these are my first attempts at embroidery. The designs are vintage kids' stories and nursery rhymes. I hope you like them!

It's Cookie Season!
This weekend I decided to make Christmas cookies. I'm not really baker, so I only do lots of cookies this time of year.
Ella decided she wanted to be the big helper today.
For some reason, Colt takes his pants down when he's mad at me - I guess he thinks I'm somehow affected by it - so this was his reaction to me telling him no more "kiecoos" (his way of saying cookies)

Grace's Christmas Program
Sunday, November 28, 2010
It's finally decorating time!
This weekend, we decided to decorate for Christmas. We get our tree from Grace's school-sponsored Boy Scout troop. This year we decided on a huge tree (nearly 10 feet!) since we have a vaulted ceiling. I decided to decorate the tree with my soft Boyd's Bears ornaments, the kids' handmade school ornaments, and old-fashioned ornaments that I bought to make it safer for Colt and to give it that "old-timey" feel.
We found a Little People nativity set that's adorable and put that out since Colt is still very handsy : )
I also put up the kids' advent calendar and I finally found some mistletoe!
For our door, I found some Christmas craft paper and wrapped it around the front door. I also bought a real balsam wreath and placed some of my wooden and metal old-fashioned ornaments around it. I also had some jingle sleigh bells and placed them on the door knob.

We don't have a fireplace, so I had to put our stockings on a bookshelf. Hopefully the next house we have will have a fireplace - wishful thinking : )

Trick or Treat!
Instead of going to any neighborhoods this year, we decided to take the kids trick or treating at the zoo here in town. It was Colt's first real time going and he had a blast!! You can probably tell by the red candy all over his face : ) It was fun, safe, and we got a few great pictures too!Saturday, October 30, 2010
Playing in the Leaves
I haven't posted much lately, Chris and I have been SO busy with school obligations (we're teachers) that we've barely had time do sleep! We finally had a day that no one had us doing anything, today we took the kids to Ligonier's Fashion Farm Pumpkin Fantasy Land. It was fun and the kids had a really good time! I hadn't been there since I was a kid and it seemed to be MUCH more then than it is now : ) I thought the kids would enjoy the fact that I had gone there every year until I was 13 or so. They had mazes, a pumpkin jumpy thing, a pumpkin display that had pumpkins dressed as famous people and cartoon characters, and of course we bought some pumpkins to carve.
Afterwards we raked up some leaves and let the kids run through them. Colt had a blast! This was his first time for this and they were a MESS, but they had a ton of fun!!

American Girl Store/Chicago Girls Only Trip
Last Saturday, the girls and I went with my sister in law, Jennifer, my niece, Anna, and my mother in law, Ruthie to the American Girl Store in Chicago. It was so much fun!! We rode the train out of Waterloo which was a new experience for the three of us. Grace slept almost the whole way there and the whole way back. It was really nice since I didn't have to drive : )
While we were there, we shopped, looked at the sights - Grace was really impressed by the huge skyscrapers! - and looked at all the cool American Girl accessories. Luckily all three girls have a doll, so no one was left out. We also ate lunch there, which was really neat! We had a four course meal - which included cinnamon buns BEFORE the actual meal, much to Ella's delight! - and the food was thankfully VERY kid and mom friendly since we are all pretty picky : ) It was an experience that none of the girls will forget. Hopefully the girls and I will get to go to the store again around Christmas time with my mom if all plans come together. More pictures will come as I get them through email : )Monday, September 13, 2010
Science Central Day

This weekend we took the kids to Science Central for the first time in five years. We had a great time and Colt really enjoyed the toddler area with the slide and water table. I enjoyed the perpetual motion device - let me tell you that I am WAY too old to be that dizzy! : )

Grace's 6th Birthday Party
We finally celebrated Grace's birthday party! We were going to celebrate at Chuck E. Cheese's, but decided at the last minute to just have cake and ice cream at the house since we all had to go to school the next day. With just a few family members (lots less than usual) we had a nice small garden party. She received lots of nice gifts and got to play with mu brother Donnie's kids.Back to School

Views from the Garden
Today was such a pretty day that I decided to take some pictures of my hibiscus and roses before they wilt because of the heat. We have four different kinds of hibiscus (I'd love to have the huge ones that are the size of small basketballs, but alas, no). Shipshewana Outing
On Saturday, the girls and I went with my mom to Shipshewana for a small get away. We walked around, did some wishful thinking about some really neat antiques, and ate at The Blue Gate Restaurant. Outside the Blue Gate was a cool koi pond and the girls wanted their picture in front of it and Grace took a really good picture of the koi fish.

Grace's Birthday and the Dunes

On Wednesday, we went to the Warren Dunes in Michigan for Grace's sixth birthday. We were pretty nervous on the way there because storms and clouds were rolling in about half way there, but the day turned out to be a beautiful one! Chris made her a sandy cake and she blew out her six stick candles : ) It was Colt's first time at the big beach and he loved the water and especially the sand - we had to keep a real close eye on him because he kept wanting to throw the sand at everyone (leave it to Colt) : ) We had a wonderful time and got a little sun and best of all, we got to spend some quality family time before school starts next week.

Grace's Haircut
On Tuesday we decided to cut Grace's hair dramatically. Since school is starting next Thursday, we decided on a simple, easy solution to our daily hair combing dilemma - cut it off! : ) I LOVE this haircut and it makes her look so much older! The picture on the left is Grace before, the picture on the right is after.

Summer 2010 Zoo Trip

Today we took our annual trip to the zoo. We had very limited time, so we focused on the new addition of our zoo - the African Safari Adventure. We fed giraffes, saw lions, zebras, and monkeys, and saw many beautiful floral specimens. It took about two hours to travel through the entire exhibit and there was a really net sky ride that Chris and Grace rode (Ella, Colt, and I stayed safely on the ground). There was also an exhibit of traditional African drums that the kids really liked! It was a beautiful exhibit and we are very lucky to have such a nice zoo in our city!

Ballet Routine
At the end of the girls' last ballet class, the instructor allowed the parents to come in and see what the kids have been working on. The class was a "basics" class for 3-5 year olds. I'm loving the Beauty and the Beast music!! Belle is definitely my favorite princess and her song fits my two princesses to a T! : )
